Day 1: Poem, Essay, Short Story

by Adrienne Rich

by David Sedaris

Short Story: "The Signal Man"

Peeling Onions is a poem that haunts me, as I, too, yearn for the grief that instead of being given a merciful way out, has stayed "stuff in my lungs like smog."

Laugh, Kookaburra is about the importance of the rooted place that family provides in our hearts. David Sedaris is hilarious. But his dark sense of humor gives way to a sweetness at the end that lodged itself in my day and traveled with me everywhere.

And The Signal Man is an exploration of the trouble soul afflicted with premonitions that he can do nothing about. He can know the future, but not prevent it.
